Raia, Goa, India (1880)

Superstition at Goa.

The Ultromar devotes two columns of its space to narrate the exploits of a supposed devil, who threw stones over the roof and inside the building, and painted ugly figures on the walls and tables of a certain house at Raia (Goa), keeping the family and the neighbours in a state of constant anxiety and fear for the space of two days. The vigilance employed to trace whether the phenomena was due to human agency proved to be ineffectual, and the parish priest was at last requisitioned to pronounce exorcism. He came to the dreaded house with a young priest in his company, and having kept a careful watch, succeeded in discovering devils in human flesh, a girl of nine years of age and a maidservant belonging to the family, who finally confessed to being the authors of the silly tricks which were until then attributed to malignant spirits.
