Rattery, Devon (1892)

 A Devonshire Ghost Story.

A story comes from Rattery, near Buckfastleigh, serving as material for a real Christmas ghost story. For some days remarkable noises have been heard in a house there. They appear to proceed from all parts, from the roof and from beneath the floors, and are said to resemble blows from a mallet or large hammer. A watch has been kept inside and out and the aid of the police called in, but without result.

Some regard it as a visitation of spirits, others believe it to be the work of someone who wishes to frighten others. A strict watch has been kept, but no discovery has yet been made to account for the noises, which a few attribute to rats. The noises are described as very alarming, and it is said the servants have determined to leave the house.
