Rouen, France (1837)

 Exorcising a Ghost.

The following curious tale is from the Journal de Rouen of the 29th ult.: – “A quiet couple, named Lemoine, living in this neighbourhood, where they carried on the trade of basket-makers, have been suddenly disturbed by dreadful noises in their house resembling thunder; the door of their stable has been frequently opened, and their cattle, though well secured, turned loose, &c.

Not being able to discover any natural cause for this uproar, the husband attributed it to the ghost of a relation who had recently died. Accordingly himself and his wife decided on quitting their residence, but before they evacuated the premises, they were determined to speak to the rector, who, on being informed of what had happened, came with two or three of his assistants, and repeated a mass. During this ceremony, four panes of glass were smashed, but when it finished, all was again tranquil. Since that period no further noise has been heard. Our good peasants are all in ecstacies with the miracle!
