Smethwick, West Midlands (1975)

 Couple defy vibrations.

Vibrations that have shaken paintings off walls and cracked the plaster in a Sandwell council home were dismissed as a plumbing fault last night. Mr and Mrs Frederick Salmon, of Linton Close, Smethwick, said they would not leave their home, despite being forced to sleep in the living room because of tremors.

The house was built five months ago on the site of a smithy. Mrs Vera Salmon said: “People have said the house is haunted, but we do not believe it. The vibrations are forceful. We are worried about how much more damage is going to be caused, but we will not be driven away.”

Coun. Gordon Morgan, chairman of the Sandwell Council Housing Committee, said: “I think it is something to do with the plumbing. The specifications may not have been followed. It has been turned into a romantic story with the blacksmith seeking revenge for us compulsorily purchasing the smithy.”
