Stoke Golding, Leicestershire (1995)

 Spooked by ‘sitting tenant.’

A new pub landlady has been completely spooked by a sitting tenant. When Michelle Johnston first moved into the Three Horse Shoes at Stoke Golding, she didn’t count on sharing it with Esmerelda, the friendly but rather boisterous ghost.

She said: “I was quite freaked out when my bathroom taps were suddenly turned on unexpectedly, the day I moved in. I was the only one in the house and it gave me quite a scare. I don’t worry now though. I have been assured that she is quite nice. She was said to have lived here when it was a farm house and to have died when she fell down the well at the back. She was quite young. I don’t know what she looks like because I have never seen her face and I don’t want to really. I think that would be much too disturbing.

“She likes to show off and there are lots of tales about flying food, especially gateaus. There have also been times when all the knives and forks in the kitchen have been thrown out. I talk to her occasionally just to keep her on the right side and hope that she will quieten down for a while. I think this house is big enough for the both of us.”
