Stone, Staffordshire (1977)

Where the spirit counter is real…

Staff at a Stone supermarket don’t stand a ghost of a chance when Charlie gets up to his tricks. Boxes and money have been sent flying and footsteps sound when nobody is around. But being prepared to enter into the spirit of things, staff have named their friendly ghost Charlie. The strange happenings at Tesco started about 18 months ago.

Mr Tony Simms, aged 27, the store manager, said today: “On one occasion a wallet containing money was knocked clean out of my hands. I looked round to see who had done it and give them a ticking off but there was nobody within ten yards of me.” Mr Simms said staff had been tapped on the shoulder, seen boxes sent crashing to the floor and heard footsteps when nobody was there. “We’re all still sceptical but there are things that have happened that cannot be explained logically.”

Mr Simms said local historians believed the store was on the site of an old pub but there had been no reports that it was haunted.
