“Ghost” baffles police.
Tappings in a wall.
From our own correspondent. Geneva, Friday.
Basle has been excited for days over a supposed haunted house in Utengasse, and crowds have kept watch before the building, in which tapping “spirits” are said to have been heard.
A boy of six is said to hear the taps as though caused by a skeleton in the wall by his bedside. The police, who were called in, believed it was trickery on the part of the boy, and placed him in bed with his arms and legs tied; but the sounds were still heard as soon as the boy approached the wall.
There is talk of evacuating the building, in which the “haunted” apartment is on the second floor. Police have searched this and adjacent houses from top to bottom without result. The boy also declares that he has several times seen an old woman dressed in red, slowly cross the room. This happened in the presence of other members of the family, who saw nothing and were surprised to see him turn pale and faint.
