Felinfach, Ceredigion (1955)

Haunted house at Felinfach?

They saw “a monster” in white.

At 2.15 a.m. on Friday, June 3, Mrs Annie Jane Pocock, 23 Bro Henllys, Felinfach, screamed with terror as she saw a large white object in her bedroom. Fascinated with horror she watched the object coming towards her, throwing out a tentacle which rattled a biscuit tin and illuminated a clock on the mantlepiece at exactly 2.15 a.m. Her husband, Mr Kenneth Stanley Pocock, awoke and saw a white object disappearing through the window and heard two clicks as if the window catch was being opened and shut. Mr and Mrs Pocock are not superstitious but they swear to the happenings of that night. Mrs Pocock described the apparition as “a monster” and when asked to draw a sketch of the object it proved to be something like an octopus with a black spot in the middle.

Mr Pocock, who is employed by the South Wales Electricity Board, Lampeter, told workmates about the night’s happenings and laughed when they told him that someone would surely die. He learnt later that a friend of the family had died that night.

The Pococks moved into number 23 Bro Henllys on April 16 this year and since then a number of mysterious things have happened. A bottle of turpentine and a bottle half full of “pop” have broken without apparent cause. Sounds have been heard during daylight and in the hours of darkness. A glass has been heard to break under a bed but when a search was made there was nothing to be seen. Mrs Pocock has heard someone beating eggs in the pantry but when she investigated she found nothing. There have been knockings on the windows and one morning there were knocks on the door but when opened there was nothing there.

Other people can testify to the noises. Mrs Mabel Pocock, 12 Kingsmead, Lampeter, mother of Mr K. Pocock, has heard the sounds of glass breaking and visitors have heard the sounds of clanking tins. Before the Pococks moved in th ehouse was occupied by a Pole, Mr Simon Mirski and his family, and they also complained of noises.

Now, the Pococks do not use the upstairs rooms and they sleep downstairs with all the lights on. Mr Pocock told our reporter that he had very often worked at night and he had never seen or heard anything like this. He described vividly the events of the past few weeks, and though mystified he is not frightened. However, he and his wife would like some explanation and they are seriously considering sending for a ‘wizard’ from South Wales to help solve the mystery.
