Liskeard, Cornwall (1997)

Spooky goings on at charity shop.

Staff at a charity shop in Liskeard fear their premises have become the favourite haunt of a spirited prankster. A supernatural joker has moved in to the Red Cross shop in Fore Street and has created havoc over the last five weeks. Volunteers are convinced a poltergeist has set up shop in the former SWEB building and even the town’s police described the ghostly goings-on as ‘weird’.

Staff have been rattled by a series of spooky incidents which they say defies logical explanation. The incidents include: Footsteps, coughing and whistling on the stairs – but nobody there; Washing up liquid squirted all over the walls, floors and posters; A teapot and other items seen balancing upside down; A milk bottle containing two inches of milk was turned onto its neck without a drop being spilt; Security alarms being set off – again with nobody there; Books thrown off shelves.

Manager of the shop, Rebecca Salinger, said the 25 volunteers had now got used to the latest member of the team and there were no plans to exorcise the shop of its newest recruit. A police spokesman confirmed they had been called to investigate the incidents. They initially thought someone was playing a joke, but were baffled by the lack of signs of entry or trespassers. The spokesman added: “It’s weird. The shop volunteers have reported all sorts of strange goings-on. They genuinely believe some sort of ghost has moved in.”
