You Fufeng, Shaanxi, China (4th century)

Zang Zhongying of You Fufeng was a Shiyushi (Attendant Eunuch). When his family prepared food and set the table, some unclear dust or dirt fell onto it to defile it. Just as the rice was about to be cooked, they could not find where the pot had gone. The crossbows operated by themselves. Fire broke out from within the chests and baskets, burning all the clothes inside, yet the chests and baskets remained intact. One day, all the mirrors belonging to the women and female servants suddenly disappeared; several days later, they were thrown from beneath the hall into the courtyard, accompanied by a voice saying, “Here are your mirrors back.” A granddaughter of three or four years old went missing. When they searched for her, she could not be found; after two or three days, she was discovered crying beneath the excrement in the latrine. Such incidents were not isolated. Xu Jishan of Ru’nan, who was usually skilled in divination, cast a horoscope and said: “There should be an old blue dog at home, as well as an eunuch named Yixi serving inside the palace; they are working together to cause this. If you truly wish to end these disturbances, kill this dog and send Yixi back to his hometown.” Zhongying followed the advice, and the strange occurrences ceased. Later he was transferred to serve as Taiwei Changshi, and later promoted to xiang of Lu.
